SYTYCD Top 8 Performance Recaps

Each week the dancers draw new partners while Canadians vote for their favourite individual dancer each week. Tonight's dances featured solos, two pair dances, and group routines.

Top Four Guys: The top four guys performed a theater number from Jersey Boys choreographed by Melissa Williams. Dressed in suits and hats the men danced an energetic, yet highly out of sync routine. Emanuel's sprained ankle was apparent as he was clearly off on jumps and spins. Mia loved the concept and found it cool, but didn't say anything beyond this. Dan thought the guys were beginning to finally emerge. The judging moved along quickly, a bit rushed for some reason.

Top Four Girls: The top four girls danced jazz to Dr. Feelgood by Sean Cheesman. The dance showcased how powerful and equal the female dancers are this year. In comparison to the men, they blew them away with this group routine. Mia noted these four women are the best top four female dancers of any SYTYCD show. Dan found it sexy and sophisticated. He went on to say that he would be shocked if one of these women wasn't the winner this year.

Vincent & Tara-Jean: Vincent & Tara Jean drew rumba and were choreographed by Eric Caty. The dance flowed nicely and contained several good lifts. It did not seem to involve much partnering as both dancers were often in different areas on the stage. Mia had goosebumps and teary eyes - the dancers were inside the dance and took her on a journey. Their second dance featured a bad, horrible krump routine. Dan and Mia praised it.

  • Vincent danced a gyrating ballroom solo to MC Hammer.
  • Tara-Jean danced a contemporary solo drenched in emotion.

Cody & Kim: Cody & Kim danced a 90s hip-hop number with Luther Brown. Since the dance was the main style for both dancers, it came off very well. It may have saved Cody this week. Mia found it way dope while Dan thought it was a great, great performance. Tre thought it was sharp and commanding. For their second dance, the pair had a smooth waltz in which Cody looked constipated. Mia thought it was awful. Dan agreed it didn't work out.

  • Cody danced a solo that looks like every solo he's ever danced. Nothing new.
  • Kim danced a hair-flipping hip-hop (?) routine for her solo.

Emanuel & Melanie: Emanuel & Melanie drew contemporary and were choreographed by Sabrina Matthews. The dance used strong technical elements with a ballet influence. The routine exhibited emotion and a good connection between the pair. Emanuel didn't seem to fumble with his injured foot or fingers. Mia told Melanie that she loved her strength and vulnerability. Dan felt the dance was lacking something and that Emanuel forced moments of the performance. Their second dance was a fun disco routine. Judges found it OK.

  • Melanie danced a contemporary solo with a jerky beat and odd movements.
  • Emanuel danced a solid routine but the dance didn't have much substance.

Everett & Jayme Rae: Everett & Jayme Rae drew mambo and were choreographed by Gustavo Vargas. Jayme Rae danced the heck out of the dance while Everett seemed along for the ride. He appeared more goofy than sexy. Jayme Rae's outfit kept falling apart throughout the routine, with pieces flying all over the stage even while she stood for the judging. Dan thought it was the best performance of the night. For their second dance, the pair had jazz-funk which was the most entertaining dance of the night.

  • Jayme Ray danced a powerful solo number in which she emotionally committed to the dance.
  • Everett danced an entertaining solo tap routine to Stand By Me. He looks more and more like Benji Schwimmer every day.
