Brandon and Janette hear Mary's screams; Ashley and Kupono perform a less-than-memorable dance; Jonathon and Karla pulled out of the underdog spot

On the June 17, 2009 episode of So You Think You Can Dance, Top 18 Perform, the remaining dancers performed the dances they chose at random last Thursday. Lil’ C was the night’s guest judge.

The Performances

Randi and Evan – Jive – They described their performance as fun, and they were spot on. The performance was fun to watch and looked fun to do. Evan was told he needed to open up more. Randi was called a firecracker. Mary said the pair was “built for the Jive.”

Melissa and Ade - Jazz – Their performance had a strong, raw feel to it, and they were very in sync. Lil’ C said he believed Ade could be everyone’s competition. Mary said she loved everything about the performance.

Jason and Caitlin – Hip-hop – Jason and Caitlin were emotionally connected during their performance, but Caitlin didn’t seem as strong as Jason. Lil’ C said the moves were so clean the performance was corny. Mary thought the dancers were out of sync. Nigel thought the dancers looked very good doing the routine.

Brandon and Janette – Disco – This performance had fantastic choreography, and the couple looked like it was the most fun they had ever had. They were a blast to watch. Lil’ C thought Brandon was phenomenal. Mary was very enthusiastic about the performance. She stood up for them and let out a huge scream.

Asuka and Vitolio – Waltz – Their waltz was powerful and beautiful, especially the lifts. Mary’s breath was taken away by the performance, and she had tears in her eyes because she thought it was so wonderful. Nigel said the lines were amazing, and the performance had a rare and touching quality.

Max and Kayla – Pop/Jazz – The performance was very theatrical and had beautiful costumes. Lil’ C thought the couple did fantastic, and he didn’t have any critiques for Kayla. Mary was surprised by Max’s performance and thought Kayla nailed it. Nigel called Kayla an incredible dancer.

Jonathan and Karla – Contemporary – Some of the lifts looked weak, but the performance was beautiful. Mary thought Jonathon danced contemporary better than his own style. She said she was spellbound. Nigel also said he couldn’t believe how fantastic the performance was. Lil’ C said everything was a perfect balance.

Phillip and Jeanine – Tango – The couple’s tango was spicy. Phillip seemed too serious, even for the tango. Mary liked the couple’s attitude, but she didn’t feel the technique was on point. Lil’ C thought Phillip danced without confidence. Lil’ C pointed out that Phillip had bent knees, Mary stepped in to correct him and the choreographer cleared up that Phillip’s knees did need to be bent. Nigel said the dance was entertaining but not technically good.

Ashley and Kupono – Hip-hop – This dance was unlike any of the other dances. Ashley played Kupono’s shadow, and the couple was completely in sync at all times. Mary said it was just OK, and she didn’t think it was memorable. Lil’ C said he saw Ashley having a hard time mirroring Kupono because he was struggling. Nigel said the dance stopped just when he was starting to enjoy it. He said he was under-whelmed by the performance.
