The new couples don't show a connection; Several couples hear Mary's screams; Nigel bets on Karla and Jonathan's status
On the June 24, 2009 episode of So You Think You Can Dance the top eight couples performed. Before the performances began Mary said she believes this group of dancers is making the show the biggest and best it has ever been. Nigel said he isn’t ready to choose a top ten yet because people are still proving themselves to the judges and America. SYTYCD Week 3 PerformancesKarla and Jonathan – Hip Hop – This routine didn’t stand out. Nigel felt there was no excitement in the routine, and he even said he bets they will be in the bottom three this week. Mary said the chemistry wasn’t there. Toni said the couple didn’t work together. Asuka and Vitolio – Jazz – Their routine was simple, but they made it outrageous. Nigel screamed “fantastic!” Mary said it was good, but she didn’t feel the same as she did last week. Toni told the couple to let their emotions take them to the next level. Melissa and Ade – Rhumba – The couple showed off their sensual, connected sides. Nigel said Melissa looked sexy and Ade danced amazingly. Mary screamed over how believable the routine was. Toni thought the dance was beautiful and the sensuality was on. Janette and Brandon – Hip Hop – This performance was electrifying and so much fun to watch. Nigel was impressed with Brandon’s hip hop moves and Janette’s rock moves. Mary thought the couple nailed it. Toni thought the couple showed a great connection. Kayla and Kupono – Viennese Waltz – This was a good choice for their first dance together because it showed their connection. Nigel thought sometimes the routine worked and sometimes it didn’t, but he did think the routine was beautiful. Mary gave the couple their first scream. She thought the routine was elegant and believable. Toni said she really liked the performance, but she was not thrilled with the lack of shoes. She was particularly impressed with Kayla. Randi and Evan – Contemporary – This dance has some interesting and creative moves. Nigel thought the choreography was beautifully danced. Mary gave the couple a huge scream. She said it was one of the best numbers of the night. Toni thought they completely lived up to their choreographer’s amazing ability. Caitlin and Jason – Paso Doble – The music was intense but the passion between Caitlin and Jason was not. Nigel thought the performance was exceptionally good, and he loved Caitlin’s flow. Mary said the performance was very strong, but she commented that occasionally Jason lost his posture. Toni thought the performance was powerful. Jeanine and Phillip – Broadway – This dance was incredible. The moves were on point with the category, and the dancers played up their characters the whole way. Nigel thought Jeanine’s personality was perfect for the dance, but he thought Phillip lacked personality. Mary loved Phillip’s jump but thought his footwork lacked technique. Toni thought the couple was better this week than last week.
