Mia Michaels changes her mind about one dancer; Janette and Brandon get screams from Mary; Karla and Vitolio perform their first dance together

On the July 1, 2009 episode of So You Think You Can Dance the top seven couples performed.

Before the performances guest judge Mia Michaels was asked if her opinion had changed since the last time she judged. She said she wouldn’t name names but her opinion had changed for the better for one particular dancer. Nigel guessed Brandon, and the group broke out in laughs.

The Performances

Janette and Brandon – Cha-Cha-Cha – Janette and Brandon danced beautifully together, and they looked very connected. Nigel said it was the best Cha-Cha-Cha he had ever seen, and he called Brandon the Michaelangelo of the dance floor. There was a lot of screaming from Mary, and she said Janette made her technique look exciting. Mia said Brandon has a ton of talent and ability.

Kayla and Kupono – Contemporary – This performance had a lot of emotion in it, which made it gorgeous. Nigel said Kupono was a new, and better, man tonight. Mary thought the performance brilliantly played to their strengths. Mia said Kayla took the choreography to another level.

Randi and Evan – Broadway – This performance was comical on purpose but not as strong as the others. Nigel was disappointed that Evan didn’t bring enough to the dance. Mary thought the style was done fairly well, but she thought it could have been brighter. Mia said Randi’s movement was a little heavy and she expects more from Evan.

Caitlin and Jason – Pop-Jazz – This performance had a lot of personality. Nigel thought both dancers committed themselves 100 percent to the odd performance. Mary thought they didn’t show off their strengths. Mia thought it was fun but hated the costumes.

Jeanine and Phillip – Hip-hop – This performance was exciting and incredible because they were attached to one another with a chain. Nigel said they should always dance attached because it was so phenomenal. He also thought hip-hop was a fantastic style for both of them. Mary said Jeanine took her breath away tonight. Mia said she loved the performance but sometimes the choreography with the chain bothered her.

Melissa and Ade – Classical Pas de deux – This performance was sweet, elegant and playful. Nigel thought Ade’s lifts were fantastic. Mary said the couple put her in a dream-like state that she didn’t want to wake up from. Mia loved that the show was finally celebrating classical ballet, and she felt Melissa nailed the performance.

Karla and Vitolio – Quickstep – This performance was adorable and made very exciting by a mid-performance, on-stage costume change by Karla. Nigel thought it was entertaining and he felt the technique was good, but he said he would have like to have seen more bounce in the Charleston section. Mary thought the moves were just right most of the time. Mia thought the dancing was good but the choreography made them.
