Janette and Brandon come as close to perfection as possible; Phillip has his best performance outside his style yet

The July 8, 2009 episode of So You Think You Can Dance was the first double performance night for this season’s dancers.

First Performance

Melissa/Ade – Disco – This performance was upbeat and had a lot of energy but Melissa did have a fall at the end of the routine. Nigel thought the performance was tremendous and showed strength. Mary said the routine was fun and the lifts were incredible. Tyce thought the performance was “friggin’ great.”

Kayla/Kupono – Contemporary – This performance was romantic, beautiful, intense and passionate. Nigel thought Kayla’s technique was amazing and Kupono was powerful. Mary said Kayla was flawless. Tyce thought Kupono could’ve been stronger in his acting, but he thought the couple brought the story of addiction to life through their dance.

Caitlin/Jason – Foxtrot – Caitlin was like a sexy, sultry woman of the 20s, and Jason’s technical skills were right on. Nigel compared Caitlin to Grace Kelly because she made things look so easy. He thought Jason’s footwork was much improved. Mary thought Caitlin looked like she was floating. Tyce said the couple could’ve glided more.

Jeanine/Phillip – Russian folk dance – This dance was sweet and simple but not a favorite. Nigel was disappointed with the choreography because it was “too folky.” Mary said the performance was interesting and believable but the difficulty wasn’t there. Tyce thought the couple executed the dance very well.

Randi/Evan – Hip-hop – Randi and Evan’s moves were strong and precise, and they were in perfect sync. Nigel thought the couple showed great chemistry. Mary said she was pleasantly surprised. Tyce told Evan to come out of his shell and explore his characters.

Janette/Brandon – Argentine Tango – The passion Janette and Brandon showed for one another was really intense and magical. Nigel paused before giving his reaction – a standing ovation, which Mary, Tyce and the crowd followed along to. Nigel said it was the closest they’ve ever seen to perfection for a ballroom dance on the show. Mary thought it was outstanding. Tyce called them a power couple.

Second Performance

Melissa/Ade – Waltz – Melissa and Ade make look technical dances like the Waltz look so breathtaking every time. Nigel thought Ade’s lifts and lines were beautiful. Mary said Melissa looked flawless. Tyce thought the performance was well danced but they needed to show more trying.

Kayla/Kupono – Broadway – This performance was fun and full of energy and emotion. It made me want more. Nigel felt the performance lacked the toughness necessary for the song. Mary said they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Tyce said they needed to dig in to the character more.

Caitlin/Jason – Lyrical jazz – This performance had a lot of beautiful lifts. Nigel liked it technically but didn’t see chemistry. Mary thought the performance wasn’t memorable but was very good. Tyce thought the couple played it safe.

Jeanine/Phillip – Jive – The high energy and big personality of this Jive was fantastic. Nigel said this was the best Phillip has been outside his style. Mary said Jeanine will definitely be around next week. Tyce told the viewers to call “1-888-Fan-friggen’-tastic.”

Randi/Evan – Samba – The choreography was hot but the energy didn’t seem there. Nigel said the couple wasn’t hot enough. Mary thought the couple lived up to the partner work but didn’t seem all committed to the moves. Tyce thought Evan lacked strength.

Janette/Brandon – Jazz – This was a fun performance that had some wild moves. Nigel said the couple showed everyone there isn’t anything they won’t do brilliantly. Mary screamed that they had saved the best for last. Tyce said he felt proud, privileged and inspired after watching them.
