TLC's Making Over America Episodes One and TwoTrinny and Susannah Cross the Pond to Save Fashion Victims
Brit fashionistas Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine have brought their withering wit to American women in fashion distress. Here's how it's going so far.
A lot of makeover show mavens fell in live with Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine when they helmed the original British version of “What Not To Wear.” Now the lasses have come to America to dish about fashion, body image and perfect shoes for every occasion. If you missed them the first time around and don’t want to know how things go, stop reading now. There is a spoiler or two ahead. “Making Over America” Episode One Trinny and Susannah take their trailer to Virginia, following in the footsteps of the Jamestown settlers. There they find a cheerleading coach named Jennifer, who is hiding her curves and beauty behind baggy sweats and tees, a lack of makeup and a questionable hair approach. Trinny and Susannah go to her home and find a few things that make her look voluptuous and sexy, not dumpy and down. They even offer suggestions for her to spruce up her athletic shoes. After all this, Jennifer goes shopping with Trinny and Susannah. After the necessary bra fitting, they show her a simple black dress that looks sophisticated and chic and brings out her blond hair. A tear or two is shed and Trinny and Susannah hop into their trailer, have a cup of tea and ride off to the next woman. “Making Over America” Episode Two Trinny and Susannah head to Fort Meade, Maryland to save Staff Sgt. LaShunda from her multiple personality fashion disorder. By day, the sergeant is in uniform, strong and authoritative. On date night, it’s a ripped denim mini with chains lashing her bare thighs, hoochie mama shoes and a skimpy top she doesn’t even want her mama to see (This may explain why she’s a single mother of three). When LaShunda “dresses up,” she looks like an 80 year old matron in the Pastor’s Aid Society. In order to get a feel for LaShunda’s life, Trinny and Susannah don fatigues, share some body image misconceptions with the other women on the base, and make LaShunda clean out her closet. For inspiration, they give her an obscenely fabulous pair of giraffe-skin peep toe platform pumps. LaShunda weeps and throw out most of her wardrobe. Trinny and Susannah want LaShunda to shop with her 30th birthday party in mind. She finds some cute, casual outfits with tailored jeans and short-sleeved jackets. She also finds a dress to go with the Killer Shoes. Trinny and Susannah have more tea in their trailer and nod approvingly. They also send her to a hairdresser (LaShunda’s weave was about go to AWOL) and offer makeup tips which help downplay some small patches of acne. The birthday party is a success, with LaShunda’s coworkers, Mom, children and friends delightedly expressing approval for her new look. Like all makeover shows, “Making Over America” has happy endings and excellent wardrobe tips for all figure types. Add Trinny and Susannah, and you get more euphemisms for breasts and bottoms plus a lot of cups of tea. Let’s see where the trailer goes next.
