Goldilocks Revisited

Mystery Stresses the Importance of Storytelling, VH-1
Seven students remain where they must entertain preschool girls with an original version of Goldilocks.

Previously on The Pick Up Artist, the guys learned about changing their appearance in order to attract a woman's attention. This episode they're talking to women. Very, very young women. Kids, in fact. Mystery tells the guys that engaging children in a story is similar to opening a “set” (or group of people) in that you have to be entertaining and engaging. Talking to women, we then deduce, is just like telling a good story.

Charm Knows No Age Limit

The guys get a chance to practice this theory by telling the story of Goldilocks to the girls. Each guy comes in one by one and tells the story over and over… and over. While this may seem like a good challenge, it’s clear that the guys that went first had the clear advantage. After all, the girls are children and their attention span is limited – especially when hearing the same exact story seven times in a row.

Nonetheless each gives it the college try. Joe W. comes out first and as he gets louder he notices they do too. Instead of talking over them he quickly learns not to compete with the kids. He then quietly tells the story and seems to have their interest.

Next up is Kosmo, whose strategy seems to be taking his own fear and turning it on the kids. He tells the scariest Goldilocks story the girls have probably ever heard. Worst of all, he didn’t even seem to follow what he was saying.

Fred went next and gave it his best, but one of the girls called him “weird,” causing him to aptly state that his goal was “getting out with your soul still in tact.” Somewhere through the story he tried to imitate a monkey, causing one of the girls to look alarmed on his behalf.

Joe D. used the smart tactic of getting the girls involved in the story by acting out parts, and by all accounts did a fine job. Brady, on the other hand, was quite obviously nervous, and most of the girls looked bored during his story.

Pradeep suggested the girls sit on his lap for the story, and thus completely lost control of the entire crowd as one by one they jumped around him. Mystery looked on with worry.

Pradeep Influences the Vote

At the end, the girls came in the room separately and offered her judgment as to the best storyteller. Again, this seemed like a good idea in theory, but by the time these kids got back to the room it was doubtful whether they remembered any of the stories. Through the “voting process” Mystery would ask each girl to vote, whereby she would scan the guys looking confused and antsy. Pradeep caught on to this, and began to encourage each girl to point to him. He succeeded, and although he clearly should not have won, he did.

The guys felt Pradeep had cheated, and to make matters worse he came back to the house and bragged about his victory. Joe D. confronts him honestly, and Pradeep finally seems to get it. Kosmo even calls Pradeep a “diabolical genius that tries everything backwards.” All the guys seem to agree that Pradeep has now opened up the “cut throat” part of the competition.

Next up: Putting storytelling in action.
