The Pick Up Artist - Storytelling

Week Three

Aug 21, 2007 Cherie Burbach

The seven guys put their storytelling skills to the test with women in a club.

Mystery reminds the guys that the first phase in picking up women is the opening – which they covered the week before. The second phase is to “be interesting” so the woman will be interested in you, and that all the guys should have lots of stories in their pick up arsenal.

DHV and Negs

Mystery gives examples of “DHV” (demonstration of higher value) material and of “Negs” (which is a statement of action one makes to briefly disqualify yourself as a potential partner) so the girl won’t feel threatened.

The Wingmen work with the guys on practicing DHV spikes in stories and throwing negs at the target Later, the guys have a chance to show what they’ve learned at the club. It is this stage of the show where the guys really display their sincerity and earnestness. Joe D. opens up the night and does extremely well. Joe W. follows and does even better. This is where it looks as if the guys are genuinely changing into pick up artists.

Scott and Brady both enter next. This tag team approach doesn’t seem to work well. Brady makes himself look foolish by pacing and smacking his gum. When he tries to open a set, the woman actually moves away from him.

Kosmo bombs early on by trying to be a comedian, and a bad one at that. At one point he even asks the women he talks to if they are bored – and they answer yes! Ever the sound bite, he says he is doing the opposite of DHV – demonstrating lower value.

Fred is keyed up and walks around with his hand up, as if he’s already stopping anyone from trying to talk to him. He’s hyper, and bombs quickly. When things don’t work out he then starts talking about how he sells bedroom furniture. This is the second week in a row where Fred has not learned the lesson, so things at this point do not look good for him. Pradeep then walks up to Fred as if they’re long lost pals and actually sits right in front of him, blocking Fred’s view of the “set.”

Joe W. Chooses His Wingmen

In the end, none of the guys get phone numbers from the women in the club, but it’s clear Joe W. has done the best job. While Joe decides on who to choose for his wingmen, Pradeep corners him and basically begs Joe to pick him. One can’t help wondering if Pradeep is playing Joe. Nonetheless, Joe agrees, and chooses Pradeep along with Kosmo. Again, Kosmo gets saved by the generosity of the challenge winner.

As the show wraps up, Mystery reminds the guys on how far they’ve come. He then begins handing out medallions, yellow this time – which represent “cleansing action.” Despite being safe from elimination, Mystery tells Pradeep he’s got to step up his game. Pradeep nods excessively while he diligently listens.

Joe D. gets the next medallion and Mystery comments that he is “improving with every set.” Scott receives the next medallion for his commitment to the teaching process. That left Fred and Brady at the end. Mystery says he feels like he should eliminate both of them because they seemed to take a step back in the field tests. Brady, however, is given a chance for another week. Fred is sent home. Mystery reminds them both that if you “keep doing what you’ve always done you’ll also get what you’ve always gotten.” Good advice for us all.
