The HillsHeidi leaves Lauren Conrad for Slimey SpencerApr 25, 2007 Devorah Macdonald
Lauren Conrad is adrift once more in a season finale that echoes last season's ending. Will Lauren bounce? Will Hopeless Heidi get smart? The drama continues on the Hills
The Hills Are AliveFrom the hills of Laguna Beach to the hills of Hollywood, Lauren Conrad is quickly learning that life is a little more challenging than what dress to wear and which party to attend. This reality show offers an inside look at what it is like to be carefree and single in the California sunshine. The cast of characters have struck a chord with an audience who would trade places with any one of them for the opportunity to live in Hollywood, drive a nice car and worry about little else than what restaurant to lunch at or where to meet for drinks. The half hour shows primarily revolve around conflict between Likeable Lauren Conrad (Laguna Beach) and her hopelessly in love girlfriend and roommate (‘til now) Heidi Montag, as they navigate through the singles scene in Hollywood. Other girlfriends add spark to the mix of players that include boyfriends who couldn’t be more stereotypical of the ‘playboy of life.’ Lauren interns at Teen Vogue alongside friend Whitney Port, who clearly has an edge over Lauren in the chance to rise through the ranks to a better position with the magazine. The girls seem to champion each other but, a recent episode saw Whitney take a tumble in a televised appearance and Lauren did seem to delight in Whitney’s embarrassment. The beauty of following this show is being a witness to the almost imperceptible clues to the real character of each individual. Over time, the cracks start showing. Lauren’s patience with Heidi and her ignorance about slimy boyfriend Spencer Pratt (Princes of Malibu) is wearing thin. Heidi can’t wrap her head around the warning signs that Lauren and everyone else involved see as trouble ahead for Heidi and her relationship with Spencer. Refusing to believe the truth about the cad Spencer so clearly personifies, Heidi remains steadfast in her love for him and the season ends with her decision to move in with him. It’s not exactly a cliffhanger, but there is room for lots of intrigue going forward. Will it work out? Where can Heidi go if it doesn’t work out now that Audrina Partridge has moved in to take up Heidi’s vacancy at Lauren’s? Audrina and Heidi have had issues in the past over Spencer and there is no love lost between the two of them. Will Audrina turn Lauren against Heidi now that she is in line to be Lauren’s N.B.F.? Will Whitney get the job as head of all interns at Teen Vogue New York? How would that affect Lauren who is clearly not the brightest intern in the bunch? Then there is easy-going Brody Jenner (Princes of Malibu.) Brody and Lauren have a heavy flirtation going on. Will this develop into something more? The suspense is killing.
