Celebrities and professional athletes compete in a road race and river rapids race; The competitors get their first taste of the elimination obstacle course

On June 23, 2009 The Superstars premiered on ABC. The show teams up celebrities and athletes for several physical competitions, all in hopes of being named the ultimate superstar. The show is hosted by ESPN commentator John Saunders, former NFL player Warren Sapp and TV personality Jenn Brown.

The Teams

Terrell Owens (NFL) & Joanna Krupa (model)

Jeff Kent (MLB) & Ali Landry (former Miss USA)

Robert Horry (NBA) & Estella Warren (actress)

Bode Miller (professional skier) & Paige Hemmis (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition)

Kristi Leskinen (X Games athlete) & Maksim Chmerkovskiy (Dancing with the Stars)

Lisa Leslie (WNBA athlete) & Dan Cortese (actor, television host)

Jennifer Capriati (professional tennis player) & David Charvet (actor)

Brandi Chastain (Olympic soccer player) & Julio Iglesias, Jr. (singer)

Brandi and Julio Take the Lead

The first competition was a 1.1 mile race to the Atlantis hotel. Each team was given one bike, and where and when they left the book was a very important strategy point. The course included a very steep 10-story high bridge.

Bode was the early leader, but he ran in to trouble after he dropped the bike at the top of the bridge. His legs were like Jell-O.

Maks and Joanna crossed the finish line first but they didn’t have their partners so Brandi and Julio, who crossed together, took first place.

Riding the Rapids

The second competition was a river rapids race. The first heat was between Lisa/Dan, Jeff/Ali, Bode/Paige and Robert/Estella. Bode crossed the finish line first, giving his partner a huge lead in the second part of the race. They and Jeff/Ali finished first and went on to the winners’ heat.

The second heat was Krsti/Maks, Terrell/Joanna, Brandi/Julio and David/Jennifer. Jennifer and David had the lead, but Jennifer got stuck. Kristi/Maks finished first, followed by Terrell/Joanna.

After a winners’ and losers’ heat it was announced that Lisa/Dan, Robert/Estella and Jennifer/David would compete in the elimination obstacle course. A final kayak race between the middle teams – Terrell/Joanna and Jeff/Ali – named Terrell/Joanna the final elimination couple.

Terrell and Lisa Get Stuck

The elimination challenge is an obstacle course that has walls to climbs, ramps to go over and a very difficult cargo net to move through.

Terrell/Joanna and Jennifer/David competed in the first round. Terrell had the lead, but his foot became tangled up in the cargo net. Joanna was very frustrated because she couldn’t go until he crossed the finish line. David had finished and Jennifer was almost done before Joanna started.

The second round was Robert/Estella versus Lisa/Dan. Just like Terrell, Lisa’s caught foot gave the other team a huge lead. Robert had finished and Estella was halfway through when Lisa untangled her foot. Unfortunately, she got lost and confused getting out of the net. Estella finished before Lisa.

Lisa/Dan and Terrell/Joanna competed in sudden death. The teams were side-by-side the entire race, but Lisa was a little faster than Joanna, giving her team the win.

Joanna freaked out about the elimination. She wouldn’t talk to anyone, and she couldn’t stop going off about Terrell not being a real athlete and not being worth his millions.
