Mary, Nigel and Lil C are surprised by the viewers' choices for bottom six; The judges are not unanimous during their decision of whom to send home

On the June 18, 2009 episode of So You Think You Can Dance, 2 of 18 Voted Off, six dancers were forced to dance one more time to secure themselves a spot in the top 16. Also, Kristinia DeBarge performed her hit single, Goodbye.

SYTYCD Bottom Three Couples Announced

Melissa and Ade, Caitlin and Jason and Jeanine and Phillip were invited to the center of the stage. Of the three couples, Caitlin and Jason were in the bottom three. Mary said she wasn’t surprised, but she was disappointed because they had such a great performance last week.

Janette and Brandon, Karla and Jonathon and Ashley and Kupono were in the second group. Ashley and Kupono were in the bottom three, and Lil C said he was shocked by the viewers’ decision, although he did admit they didn’t quite “hit it” this week.

Randi and Evan, Asuka and Vitolio and Max and Kayla were in the final group. Max and Kayla were the final bottom three couple. The crowd looked stunned, and Nigel thought some of the viewers might not have understood the costumes and choreography of their performance last night.

Bottom Six Single Performances

Caitlin’s performance was soft and sweet, and Jason’s performance had some incredible leaps and turns.

Ashley’s performance showed off her sultry side, and Kupono’s performance was a lot of fun to watch, although it didn’t stand out technically as much as the others.

Kayla’s performance was beautiful. She truly is amazing to watch because she appears to float on air. Unfortunately, she did have a missed step. Max’s performance was fun, fast and exciting. Very Max!

Ashley and Max Sent Home

Before announcing who was going home, Nigel told the dancers the judges were not unanimous on either of their decisions.

Nigel told Caitlin she had great control. He said Ashley’s solo had no substance, and Kayla’s solo was too crowded. Nigel reminded the audience one more time the decision was not unanimous before announcing that Ashley was going home. You could tell she was disappointed, but she raised her hands high, probably in appreciation.

Next, the men stepped forward. Nigel told Jason he was very strong tonight. They said he was probably the best solo they’ve had so far, and Nigel told him he could sit down immediately. Like Ashley’s solo, Nigel said the judges felt Kupono’s solo lacked substance. He said that they did like his style, though. Nigel said the judges believe Max is an extremely hard worker, but they believe he is hindered by his ballroom background. Max was sent home, and he looked completely stunned.
