Survivor Tocantins Episode 1 Recap

Sierra Reed and Sandy Burgin Branded as Outcasts

Feb 19, 2009 Beth VanHoose

Sandy Burgin and Sierra Reed make unfavorable first impressions on their tribes, and the first castaway is voted out of Brazil.

The 16 Americans competing for the title of Sole Survivor in CBS' hit reality show are transported via truck across the tundra of the Brazilian highlands to meet host Jeff Probst to begin the game of Survivor. The castaways have already been divided into tribes - Timbira, the black tribe, and Jalapao, the red tribe. Members of Timbira are Debbie BeeBee, Jerry Sims, Benjamin Wade, Tyson Apostal, Erinn Lobdell, Candace Smith, Brendan Synnott, and Sierra Reed. Members of Jalapao are Spencer Duhm, Sydney Wheeler, Joe Dowdle, Carolina Eastwood, Stephen Fishbach, Sandy Burgin, JT Thomas and Taj Johnson-George.

As the tribes gather before Jeff, he tells them that they each have 60 seconds to retrieve as many supplies as they can from the trucks. In a mad rush, the tribes grab food, water, fruit and crates of survival gear off the trucks. Timbira seemed to know what supplies to grab, as they got all the beans and water, while Jalapao got heavy watermelons.

First Impressions

Jeff gives each tribe a map to their camp and a compass to lead the way. He explains that they are facing a four mile hike in 100 degree plus weather. Jeff then tells the tribes that one member of each tribe will not be making the journey. Since the tribe members do not know anything about each other, including names, they do their best to describe who they are voting for, based solely on first impressions. Most of the members of Jalapao cast their votes for the "old lady", Sandy Burgin, the 53-year-old bus driver from Louisville, Kentucky. Timbira votes for Sierra Reed, claiming that she looked miserable on the truck ride.

After the votes are read, Sandy claims she is pissed because she wanted to stay in the game longer, and Sierra reveals that she has strep throat, which is why she looked miserable. Jeff then reveals that Sandy and Sierra are not voted off; they just will not be making the four mile trek. While the others are hiking to their camps, Sandy and Sierra will be transported by helicopter. Sandy is happy, until Jeff reminds her that part of the game is social, and her tribe has already targeted her as an outcast.

The Journey

The two tribes set out on their trek, while Sandy and Sierra board the helicopter. Jalapao struggles with the watermelons, and wonders if they are headed in the right direction. Timbira is also questioning whether or not they are following the map correctly.

Meanwhile, Sandy and Sierra arrive at the respective camps, and are immediately faced with a decision. At each camp, there is a note telling the two outcasts that they can either search for a hidden immunity idol at their beach, or start building their shelter. Sandy elects to search for the hidden idol while Sierra starts to build a camp.

At Camp

After the long journey, the tribes finally arrive at their camps. Jalapao is upset that Sandy didn't do anything while she waited for the rest of her tribe. Timbira is impressed that Sierra has a shelter built.

The next morning, Jalapao works on their shelter while Sandy goes off by herself to look for the idol. Carolina rubs everyone the wrong way telling them they need to work as fast as they can so that they can relax. At Timbira Debbie, Sierra and Candace retrieve water with the help of a naked Tyson.

Immunity Challenge

The tribes meet Jeff for their first Immunity Challenge. In this challenge, six members of each tribe have to race across a series of sand hills to the river, where a boat is tied. In each boat are puzzle planks. The tribes have to retrieve the planks and race back across the sand hills to the other two tribe members, who will then build a staircase using the planks. Once the staircase is built, the entire tribe has to run up the stairs, where any two tribe members have to maneuver a peg through a table maze to raise the tribe flag. The first tribe to raise the flag will win immunity and fire.

Taj and Sandy are selected to build the staircase for Jalapao; with Erinn and Sierra building for Timbira. The rest of the tribe races out for the planks. Jalapao has the lead, getting their staircase built first. Sydney and Spencer begin to work the maze as Timbira finishes their staircase. Brendan and Erinn work the maze for Timbira, raising their flag first and winning immunity for their tribe.

Back at Camp

The majority of the Jalapao tribe members are still planning to vote for Sandy at Tribal Council. Sandy doesn't do much to change their minds. Taj, Sandy and Carolina relax in the river, and Carolina starts to complain that they need to be working and cleaning things up. Her constant whining rubs Taj the wrong way, and she mentions Carolina's attitude to JT. JT has also witnessed Carolina's attitude, and conveys his feelings to the rest of the tribe.

Tribal Council

Jalapao meets Jeff for the first Tribal Council. First impressions are discussed, as well as camp life over the first three days. The tribe then casts their votes 7 to 1, naming Carolina Eastwood as the first person voted out of Survivor: Tocantins.
