Airing October 8, 2009, Survivor: Samoa's fourth episode featured the game's first ever self-directed challenge, a hidden Immunity Idol, a lost chicken, and more.
Episode 4 of Survivor: Samoa, titled “Hungry For A Win,” saw one tribe’s three-episode winning streak come to an end as the underdogs finally came out on top. At Foa Foa, Russell secured yet another alliance, and at Galu, a hidden Immunity Idol was found. Here’s a recap of how it all went down: ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS Jaison is Hungry and TiredAfter Tribal Council, the Foa Foa members returned to camp and Jaison revealed that he was hungry and tired and that coming on Survivor was the worst decision of his life. The next morning, Russell secretly conspired to vote off Jaison due to his thoughts of leaving the game. Galu’s Hidden Immunity IdolShambo returned to her tribe after spending two days at Foa Foa, where she felt very appreciated by the tribe. She revealed that she feels much closer to Foa Foa and that she would side with them after the merge. Erik then approached Shambo and questioned her about the hidden Immunity Idol. A few minutes later, Jon joined in the conversation and asked about the clues. Shambo divulged the information but asked for their jury votes in return. Treemail ArrivesThe tribes received treemail instructing the chiefs to choose two tribe members to join them on a mission. For Foa Foa, Mick selected Russell and Natalie. Russell Swan selected Shambo and Dave for Galu. Reward Challenge: Bocce BallThe six competing castaways arrived at a beach and were surprised to find that host Jeff Probst was not present. After opening the treasure chest containing instructions, they learned that they were to compete in the first ever self-directed challenge. The tribe with its colored ball closest to the flag won Reward: chickens. For most of the challenge, Foa Foa was in the lead as both Mick and Russell threw their balls very close to the flag. However, at the last second, Dave tossed a ball closest to the flag for Galu, single-handedly winning them the challenge. Erik Finds The IdolBack at Galu, Erik looked for the hidden Immunity Idol while John, Brett, Kelly, and Yasmin slept and Monica and Laura were sent away from camp to collect fruit. After a brief search in a large tree at camp, Erik found the idol. Despite his earlier promise to Shambo, he claimed that his plan was to not tell anyone about the idol. Russell, Dave, and Shambo then arrived back at camp with the chickens and Shambo was assigned the role of caring for them. Stormy Weather at Foa FoaAs a storm hit Foa Foa, Jaison reiterated being tired, hungry, and thirsty, and his desire to simply survive another day. With Jaison’s uncertainness about his own future in the game, Russell re-solidified his bond with Natalie from Day One, saying that she’ll ride his coattails the whole way to the end and he’ll be able to use this against her at the Final Tribal. Natalie cautioned that she believes she is underestimated and that she can win a jury vote against Russell. Galu’s Lost ChickenOn Galu, one of the chickens laid an egg and another escaped from the coop. Erik ended up running into the clothesline while chasing after the chicken, which evaded the Galu members and flew high up in a tree. The tribe seemed happy with the egg, but Erik vented his frustrations, saying “Is anybody looking for the damn chicken? No!” Lazy YasminAs Yasmin watched Kelly chop up a coconut, Kelly vented that Yasmin does nothing around camp. She speculated that if Galu lost the challenge Yasmin would be the first to go. Immunity Challenge: Block StackingThe tribes had to collect and stack a bunch of blocks, then cross a rope bridge and stack another higher bunch of blocks. The first tribe to get both stacks completed won Immunity and was safe from the vote. Galu narrowly beat out Foa Foa on the first block tower. John, Yasmin, and Erik all did well on the rope bridge, while Monica struggled and slowed her tribe down. Ashley and Natalie helped Foa Foa make up some time. In spite of their efforts, Galu still beat Foa Foa, but barely. Both tribes worked frantically to stack the final tower of blocks. Once again, Galu had a bit of a lead but Kelly lost two blocks for her tribe. Natalie placed the final block for Foa Foa and after their tower stood tall for five seconds, the desperate tribe finally won their first Immunity Challenge. A disappointed Russell noted Monica’s poor performance in the challenge. “Survivor is about physical and mental toughness and today, Monica just did not have it,” he said. Galu Prepares For Tribal CouncilFacing Tribal Council for the first time, Russell and Erik both targeted Monica for her poor performance during the challenge. Shambo and Yasmin then considered sending Monica home as well. Meanwhile, the “Club Med” group of Brett, John, Dave, Laura, Kelly, and Monica targeted Yasmin for her laziness around camp. When John informed Erik that Yasmin was on the chopping block, Erik suggested that Yasmin was stronger in challenges and advised the group not to go against Russell. He then warned Russell about the plan to vote out Yasmin, which Russell strongly disagreed with. Putting it simply, he said the tribe had to go with “performance” over “cutesiness.” Galu’s Tribal CouncilAt Tribal Council, Brett called out Yasmin for not doing work. Both Russell and Yasmin again emphasized the need for strength at the challenges to compete with Foa Foa. Monica tried to defend herself for her poor performance, and in the end, her strong friendships with Kelly, Brett, Laura, John, and Dave helped her stay in the game. Yasmin was voted out in an 8-2 vote, with even leader Russell voting her off. When to WatchSurvivor: Samoa airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
