Mike Evacuated And Betsy Voted Out At Foa Foa’s Tribal Council

The drama in Episode 2 of Survivor: Samoa focused mainly around the Foa Foa tribe and, of course, super-villain Russell Hantz, while leaving the Galu tribe a mystery to viewers. The episode was also heavy on conflict and contained two Survivor firsts, one involving the hidden Immunity Idol and one involving a player getting kicked out of a challenge. Russell Reacts to Betsy’s Vote
After Foa Foa’s first Tribal Council, Russell Hantz was upset that Betsy voted against Ashley rather than Marisa. Later, they agreed that they don’t trust each other and Betsy said that, as a police officer, she’s not afraid to stand up to Russell in the future.
“The Hood’s Not The Woods”
On Galu, Yasmin struggled with life on the island after experiencing a difficult night. She revealed that she has been having trouble adapting and that the game is harder than she expected it to be.
Foa Foa’s Hidden Immunity Idol
At Foa Foa, Jaison expressed his shock to Russell about the way he and Ben treated Marisa at the last Tribal Council. Russell got Jaison back on his side by telling him he trusts him and confiding that there may be a Hidden Immunity Idol at the Foa Foa Camp.
Russell then began a search for the idol, despite having no clues or proof of its existence. While his tribe was sitting at the campfire, Russell looked up a large hole in a tree and unexpectedly found the idol. He smuggled it away from camp without being detected by his tribemates and secured his alliance with Jaison by sharing it only with him.
Foa Foa Gets Treemail
When Treemail arrived, Mike worried about his position in the tribe. As the oldest castaway, he was most concerned about being seen as the weakest. Liz summed up the situation by saying that Mike couldn’t compete physically and if they lost the next Immunity, he’d be next to go.
Reward/Immunity Challenge: Schmergen Brawl
The tribes dressed as Samoan warriors and squared off in a very physical game of Schmergenball. Three members of each tribe battled in a pit to retrieve 3 balls. They then passed them to 3 other tribemates on platforms, who had to use them to score points on the opposing tribe’s baskets. The first tribe to score 3 points won Immunity and fishing gear.
Ben became the first person ever kicked out of a challenge when he intentionally tripped Russell Swan of Galu. Galu was the first to score 3 points. They won fishing gear and Immunity. As an additional twist, Russell Swan had to choose one of Galu’s members to go back to camp with Foa Foa. This person would observe the tribe, even at Tribal Council, and would also receive a clue to the Hidden Immunity Idol at Foa Foa’s camp (the Idol which was previously found by Russell Hantz). He decided to send Yasmin.
The challenge took its toll on many of the contestants, especially Mike, who was seen by the Medical Department immediately afterwards. After Mike had difficulty breathing and suffered from very low blood pressure, the Medical Team made the decision to pull him from the game.
Host Jeff Probst then delivered more unfortunate news to Foa Foa: despite the loss of Mike, they would still visit Tribal Council and vote out another member of their tribe. This would put Foa Foa three members behind Galu in terms of numbers.
Lost Fishing Gear
At Galu, Shannon was eager to try out the tribe’s new fishing gear. Not only did she not catch any fish, but she also lost the mouthpiece of the snorkeling gear in the swamp. Laura said that she signed her own death warrant by doing this.
Yasmin and Ben Fight
Yasmin ruffled feathers at Foa Foa when she delivered an unwelcome speech to the tribe. She claimed that she wanted to help the tribe so that Galu’s win wouldn’t be “like taking candy from a baby.” She also boldly stated that Foa Foa was lacking any strategy and called out Ben for his cheap shot during the challenge. Ben rationalized his tackle of Yasmin during the challenge by saying she was against him in the challenge and there were no rules that he couldn’t tackle a woman – a statement that led to a confrontation between the two in which Ben called her “ghetto trash” and she called him ignorant.
Betsy vs. Ben
Later that night, Ben continued to cause dissent in his tribe when he stayed up all night cutting bamboo with the machete while the rest of the tribe was trying to sleep. This caused policewoman Betsy to target Ben in order to save herself.
Mick summed up the situation by saying that although Betsy was still next to go, Ben had three big strikes against him (getting kicked out of the challenge, arguing with Yasmin, and disrupting the tribe’s sleep) and was on shaky ground with the rest of Foa Foa.
Ashley debated whether to vote off Betsy or Ben, but Russell Hantz remained determined to vote off Betsy. For Russell, Betsy had to go because she distrusted him, not because she was the so-called “weakest link.”
Foa Foa’s Tribal Council
Jeff called out Ben for his behaviour during the challenge. Ben continued his verbal assault of Yasmin and Russell joined in. Betsy pointed out that she was the only tribe member who brought her bag to Tribal Council and she tried to make another case for why Ben should be voted off. Ben remained convinced that he still had as good a chance as anyone else at winning the game. When the votes came in, Ben was spared and Betsy Bolan, the 48 year-old police officer from Campton, New Hampshire, was voted out of Foa Foa in a 7-1 vote.
