The first episode of Survivor Samoa provided the first look for viewers to see the 20 new cast members and get to know how the two tribes were going to fair this season.

The 19th season of the CBS show Survivor was held in Samoa, with a beautiful back-drop, and the largest set of contestants to start the show in the history of Survivor. The first episode of Survivor Samoa season premiere aired on the night of Thursday, September 17th.

The Survivor Samoa Tribes

The players had already been put into their two tribes as they arrived on the island, and the show didn’t spend any time letting viewers know who the 20 contestants were yet. Host Jeff Probst told them to each vote on whom their leader would be, and they had to make the votes without even chatting with or getting to know anyone; it was based entirely on their first visual impressions. The two tribes were called Galu and Foa Foa, and the elected leaders were Russell from Galu and Mick from Foa Foa.

Luckily for viewers, there are a couple of Survivor Samoa Cast lists out there to refer to until they become more familiar names.

The First Survivor Samoa Challenge

The two leaders of the tribes then had to choose players to compete in the first challenge, with the selections being the best swimmer, the smartest person, the most agile, and the strongest one without knowing anything about the other players. Mick chose Jaison as his swimmer, Elizabeth (Liz) as his smart person, Marisa as the agile person, and Russell as the strong person. For Galu Russell chose John for the swimmer, Shannon (Shambo) as the smart person, Yasmin as the agile person, and as the Erik strong person. The challenge was of course a swimming challenge, which led into a heavy carrying stage, then an agile stage including a balance beam, and finally a puzzle for the smart person. The prize for winning this first challenge was a flint to start fires with.

The swim turned out to be the opportunity for Jaison to shine as a swimmer as he blew away Russell, and then the two strong men also proved to be good at the heavy lifting. Both teams also did really well in the agile stage, making it a very close competition as the puzzle stage started. It was Liz that brought it home for the Galu team, bringing them flint in their victory, and giving everyone a first glimpse at the competitors for this season.

Survivor Samoa First Day at Camp

Russell H. on the Foa Foa tribe appeared that he could quickly become a villain on the show, trying to forge alliances with all of the women separately in order to try and have a lot of allies in the game. He decided to call them each “dumb” and even gave them the nickname as the “dumb girl alliance”, not to their face of course, but to himself in front of the camera. Betsy did however see through his game (she is a police officer) and has decided to form the alliance but not really trust him at all.

Russell S. (yes, having two Russell’s in the same season should make things confusing) got off to a quick start the first day back at the Galu tribes camp, trying to help build a structure and went to work immediately. It seemed to gain him some respect among the women, but it soon caused him to butt heads with the other strong male of the tribe who felt they knew the best way to make up the camp. It’s probably going to be something that holds over for ill-feelings later on in the season.

Russell S. took the night telling lies about being in New Orleans and losing his dog, and got nearly all the tribe to believe him, but it also raised the radar of some who are now worried about him. Then to create drama in the camp, he emptied all the canteens of water, burned someone’s sock in the fire, and various other small things to mess with people.

First Survivor Samoa Immunity Challenge

During the first Survivor Samoa immunity challenge, six members from each tribe had to run a difficult course and tow across a heavy box of puzzle pieces. The remaining four members then had to put the puzzle together for each tribe. Galu got their pieces to the end first, and their puzzle makers finished off the challenge to give Galu the first immunity win and safety.

The First Survivor Samoa Tribal Council

Galu seemed very close to self-imploding at the first tribal council, and a lot of infighting led up to the first tribal council vote. The votes were split between Marisa and Ashley, with Marisa receiving the most votes leading to her eviction from Survivor. It was clear this tribe is very divided and could be quite interesting to watch.
