Survivor on CBS - Episode 8

A Summary of the Eighth Episode of the Gabon Castaways

Nov 22, 2008 Nichole Richardson

In the eighth episode of Survivor, the castaways have been living in Africa 21 days with only 10 players remaining. A well-awaited merge threatens the tribes' allianc

After Ace's sudden departure, the six remaining Kota members try to develop a strategy to take out the other four Fong members, but question Susie's allegiance to Kota (because of what she previously said about Corinne being weaker than her). When confronted about it, Susie agrees to continue with Kota but secretly thinks she holds major swing power going into the merge.

Corinne plays the game too as she is nice to Susie, but plans to take her out of the game as soon as she can. Tree mail comes in the form of a spoon with a note alerting the tribe of a merge and feast.

Over at Fong, Matty is shocked to see that Ace was blindsided, while Sugar is aware and pleased by her maneuvering. She trusted Kenny in his plan to vote off Ace and was the swing vote for it to take place. Matty worries now that Ace is gone, he will be next (especially since he previously voted for Crystal). He and Crystal decide to "start a clean slate" and the four develop a plan for the merge involving Sugar's idol.

The Merge Feast

Once at (what is believed to be) the merge feast, everyone is ecstatic to find meatloaf, chicken, fruits, and wine for their consumption. Matty notices a tied-up box on the table with a note explaining not to open it until the feast is over. During the feast Kenny spies a clue to an individual immunity idol underneath a plate. Before he can grab it unnoticed, Charlie realizes what is happening and alerts everyone of its' presence.

After discussion about where the idol is at, Randy claims he knew the whole time by the "funky-shaped tree", and proclaims himself " King of Gabon" and then adds "all Fong and Kota members work for me. Cheers!" The idol is placed on the table; tempting all the survivors like the "Apple in Eden." Marcus calls all the player's bluffs by suggesting they throw the idol into the ocean in order to avoid the stress it may bring to them and Randy obnoxiously jumps on the bandwagon.

When the crew comes back to the table and opens the tied-up box they are shocked to discover its' contents reveal 10 stones which divide the tribes into two new tribes and no merge is in sight! The new Kota tribe becomes Bob, Marcus, Susie, Crystal, and Kenny. The new Fong becomes Sugar, Matty, Charlie, Corinne, and Randy. Marcus is left feeling good because three previous Kota members are on both tribes now; thus thay still have the numbers to win. Susie finds herself in the best position knowing she can stay alligned with Kota or swing to Fong's side.

The New Tribes

New information that Crystal is the cousin of Marcus' best friend comes to light causing Marcus to be torn between loyalty to his best friend and loyalty to his old Kota tribe. Crystal makes a play by telling Marcus she won't write his name down at Tribal, then reveals to America she's just "playing the game." Marcus is more and more worried about Susie's allegiance to old Kota.

Over at the new Fong tribe, Charlie is happy his old tribe still has the numbers so long as they stick together but is concerned Randy may switch and side with Matty. Matty upsets Sugar when he tells her she was fooled into voting off Ace by Kenny and Crystal. She and Matty make a pact to cover one another.

Tribal Challenge

Corinne tells Jeff that they are no longer being called Fong-due to its "bad connotation," and are now Fang. The castaways are given an endurance challenge requiring them to stand with their arms outstretched and use only the tops of their hands to hold two poles against an overhead board. If they lower their arms slightly the pressure on the poles will be released causing the poles to drop out. The last Survivor standing wins immunity for their tribe.

Crystal is out of the race before Probst even finishes the rules of the game. Followed by Sugar, Susie, Randy, and Ken. Bob and Marcus are the last two left for Kota and Charlie and Matty are left standing for "Fang." The challenge comes down to the oldest survivor Bob vs. young buck Matty. Although Matty's pole was right on the edge, he pulls off a win for the new Fang.

Back at Camp

Kota rehashes the events that led to their loss and Crystal and Marcus discuss voting off Ken and replacing Susie with Crystal. Marcus then heads over to Susie trying to convince her to vote Ken and promising her the final three if she does.

Crystal and Ken collaborate and she tells him of Marcus' plan to vote him off. Crystal then informs Susie not to trust Marcus; leaving Susie confused and scared by her swing-vote appeal.

The Tribe has Spoken

While at Tribal Council, Crystal alludes to Kota's fakeness and refers to them as "wearing suits." Marcus tells Jeff it's important to keep the Kota tribe strong and ready for challenges but Kenny speaks up against his "B.S.," saying that Marcus' real concern is taking out old Fong members and counting on the merge. The votes are read and Susie's swing vote marks Marcus as the ninth person out of Survivor and first to join the jury.
