The judges give personal tips to each couple; The couples perform a Paso Doble face off; Shawn Johnson earns perfect score

On the May 18, 2009 episode of Dancing with the Stars, 811, the couples performed a face off dance and their final audience-judged dances of the season.

Judges Visits

The judges visited each couple to give them personal tips on their Paso Doble.

Bruno told Shawn Johnson that she needs to dance like a champion, and she needs to extend her arms more.

Carrie Ann told Melissa Rycroft she needs to forget about her ballet style and start pretending to push people out of the way. She added that Melissa needs to be more aggressive.

Len danced side-by-side with Gilles Marini to show him exactly how he wanted the dance to be performed.

Paso Doble Face Off

The three couples performed together in a Paso Doble face off. Shawn was very strong, and her face screamed, “I’m tough.” Melissa also had the facial expression down, but her moves were much more exciting than Shawn’s. She could have been more aggressive. Gilles really stole the face off. He was so strong and in charge, and the audience was very in to his performance.

Len thought Shawn’s routine was very exciting. He said Melissa had a little mistake, but the dance was more convincing. Len thought Gilles’ performance was intense.

Bruno loved the way everyone was in sync but did their own thing. He said Shawn was very strong, Melissa has grown a lot and Gilles was strong and self-assured.

Carrie Ann said everyone was incredible. She thought Shawn’s emotional connection wasn’t as apparent. She said Melissa and Gilles nailed it.

Shawn and Mark received a 28, Melissa and Tony received a 29 and Gilles and Cheryl received a 30.

Freestyle Dances

Shawn and Mark didn’t want to rely on Shawn’s gymnastic ability because they got in trouble last time. They began their dance with crazy, masked costumes, and the removal added a fun element. Their dance was very exciting, and Shawn looked like she was having an amazing time. Bruno said the performance was “explosive” and funny. Carrie Ann said it was exactly what she was looking for. Len loved everything about it. Score – 30

Melissa and Tony chose to add a hip-hop flair to their performance. It wasn’t as exciting as Shawn’s performance, but it was pretty sexy at times. They had a lot of technical moves from other dances in their performance. Carrie Ann thought the choreography was a little off. Len said he didn’t like it and wished Melissa had gone with her ballet side. Bruno said it wasn’t as perfect as he would have liked to have seen in the finals. Score – 27

Gilles and Cheryl had an emotional connection during their dance no one could deny. The performance was strong, sweet and all around amazing. It fit both of their personalities very well, and the choreography was terrific. Len told Gilles he is a real dancer. Bruno thought Gilles needed to dance more. Carrie Ann agreed with Bruno that Gilles wasn’t enough of the focus. Score – 28
