Representing causes was the order of the day on the fourth episode of Cycle 5 of Britain's Next Top Model.

The reality TV modelling competition was now down to 12 girls vying for a contract with the U.K. agency Models 1, to be the face of a Max Factor campaign, and a spread and cover of Company magazine. The start of the episode saw many of the girls in a bad mood over the fact no one was eliminated in the previous elimination round.

However, their minds soon turned to their next challenge, where they met Jo Wood, a model and spokesperson for charities. Jo informed the girls they had 30 minutes in which they each had to prepare a speech for a group of 12- to 16-year-olds and inspire them with their passion. Madeleine blanked, but Jade spoke about battling an eating disorder. “Taking control of your life in a healthy way will make you more beautiful,” she said.

Chloe revealed her passion is makeup, and that she’s against animal testing. Then one of the kids called her out for wearing a leather jacket. “Chloe, you were terrible,” Jo said, tsk tsking her for the jacket, as well. She had a message for the rest of the girls, too. “Of all the issues to talk about, most of you talked about yourselves.” Jo then announced Daisy as the winner of challenge.

The girls’ next challenge was to take part in a live radio interview situation with DJ Johnny Vaughn. Johnny asked the girls, in groups of three, whether they would wear fur on the catwalk, what they thought of Lisa, what judges scared them, what’s so special about them as a model, and who they would like to see eliminated next.

Daisy and Sophie admitted to disliking Chloe, and when Johnny told Chloe most of the girls wanted her gone, she replied, “That’s cause I’m the biggest threat, isn’t it?” Viola said absolutely nothing when she was questioned. Johnny chose Annaleise as the challenge winner, and she was allowed to pick one other person to share the prize: Shopping for clothes and jewelry at Swarovski crystals with the help of celebrity stylist Hershey Pascual. Annaleise chose Ashley.

Britain's Next Top Model Cycle 5, Episode 4 Photo Shoot

Next was the photo shoot, where the girls had to shoot shocking campaigns for various issues, such as domestic violence, alcohol awareness and quitting smoking. Jade posed as a human carcass between two beef shanks; Madeleine lay in a coffin with a cigarette; and Ashley posed with a date at a formal affair, one side of her face battered and bruised.

The shoot struck a chord with Ashley, as she dealt with abuse in her past, and it made her emotional. It came across in her photos, as the judges pointed out at elimination. Ashley began to cry, and Lisa hugged her and told her she’s a survivor and strong. “I looked at this image and went cold all over,” judge and hat designer Louis Mariette said of Ashley’s shot.

Viola, Sophie and Chloe all received praise for their photos, whereas Kasey (“You haven’t quite nailed it,” said Lisa) and Hayley (“She looks like Forrest Gump kind of drunk,” said judge and photographer Huggy Ragnarsson) were among the girls who received the worst critiques.

In the end, the bottom two girls were Kasey, for misreading the brief and not acting enough in her shoot, and Lauren, for the lack of versatility in her expression, which limits her as a model. Lauren was sent home. “I just feel a bit let down because I don’t think I was the worst,” Lauren said at the end of the episode. “I’m going to obviously keep going.”
