Top 16 Recap Project Runway 6 Episode 1Recap S06E01 of Los Angeles Season Premier on Lifetime
Returning for a sixth season, Project Runway premiered on Lifetime and at its new set in Los Angeles. This season's designers displayed their unique fashion and designs.
Project Runway Season 6 premiered at its new home on Lifetime and remained true to form. Having moved from New York to Los Angeles, the change in venue didn't change the Project Runway look or feel. The show opened with an eclectic mix of 16 designers, selected from the thousands who applied, anxiously strolling into their new apartment. Ranging in age from 24 to 49, the designers provided brief snippets of interesting information about themselves. Ra'mon once attended medical school before finding his passion for design, while Johnny explained his recovery from crystal meth. Ari explained her transformative clothing concept while Louise displayed her vintage look, reminiscent of Kenley Collins from Project Runway Season 5. No sooner had the designers set down their bags and made small-it was up to the roof for a meeting with Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum. Heidi looked radiant, as though she indeed found a way to turn back time. Tim remained his charming, yet stoic, self. The following Project Runway recap contains spoilers and will note the winner, as well as who was eliminated in episode 1. Project Runway Top 16 Episode 1 Recap: The First Challenge Arriving at the Nokia Theater, lined with red carpet for the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the designers learned the challenge would be to create a red carpet look demonstrating innovation while representing the designer's individual point of view. Giddy with excitement, the designers marched off to sketch before 30 minutes of stressful shopping at Mood. Individual working styles, as well as strengths and weaknesses, soon emerged as the designers sat down with their sketch pads and fabric purchases. Ari admitted she doesn't sketch but instead lets the fabric and concept take hold of her. She also prefered to alter the fabric into a texture and transformed it into geodesic shapes which Tim thought looked like a soccer ball. A self-taught designer, Christopher seemed intimidated by sewing terminology and techniques used by the designers who had fashion design education. Gordana admitted that she wished she'd been able to attend design school. Designers worked at a frantic pace, but one in particular became overly frustrated. Johnny changed his design at several points and then began to second-guess his work. He panicked and became emotional, even discussing whether he should be there. Tim intervened and talked him down so that he could get back to work. Project Runway Top 16 Episode 1 Recap: Top Three Selected Nina Garcia and Michael Kors returned this season to assist Heidi with judging, while this week's special guest judge turned out to be Lindsay Lohan. The runway show brought delightful surprises and also striking disappointments for the judges. After reviewing the designs, Heidi called Shirin, Epperson, Gordana, Carol Hannah, Logan, Althea, Nicolas, Irina, Malvin, Louise to step forward and let them know they had done enough to avoid elimination this week. The remaining six designers had the highest and lowest scores. Christopher played with the juxtaposition of hard and soft, both Heidi and Michael liked it. Nina found it darkly romantic while Lindsay wanted less ruffles at the bottom. Heidi noted that she would wear it but would prefer a different color. Michael found Ra'mon's dress chic while Lindsay found it safe but enjoyed the design. Nina found Johnny's dress liquid and sexy while Michael found the dress interesting and felt the red color distracting. Cool shape, but everyone agreed it should be in a different color. Project Runway Top 16 Episode 1 Recap: Bottom Three Selected Ari produced a futuristic, short dress which confused the judges. Ari's explanation that it could work for both the VMA red carpet and Nobel Peace Prize awards didn't help matters. Michael didn't find beauty in the oddity of her garment and Lindsay questioned Ari's awareness for what is acceptable. Michael Kors continued by commenting that Qristyl's model would be killed by the press for the construction of the dress front, which Heidi called, "Messy.". Mitchell, who decided to sew his model into scrap so sheer fabric, explained he had measurement issues which caused a radical, last-minute shift in his design. Nina liked the attitude of the dress, although she found it too sheer and unwearable. Project Runway Winner Announced & Final Two Selected: Auf Wiedersehen The judges narrowed the field once again by sparing Johnny and Ra'mon, Qristyl, while Christopher was announced the challenge winner. Ari and Mitchel remained in the bottom two. Heidi told Ari, "It's one thing to aim outside of the box, and another to miss it completely." And to Mitchell Heidi commented, "We thought that your look was unwearable for the red carpet. It was a sheer nightgown." Heidi announced Mitchell would remain in the competition while Ari would become the first designer to be eliminated. Ari said her goodbyes and left without any hard feelings, realizing that someone has to be the first to go. She cheerfully admitted, "You need to take risk responsibly. And, I feel like I've learned that from this experience." Catch Up on Project Runway 6 Read more Project Runway episode recaps. Project Runway Season 6 airs Thursday nights at 10pm ET/PT on Lifetime.
