This week's show featured a team surfwear challenge which created both strong partnerships and bitter differences. Who was kicked off? Who was eliminated?

Fresh from completing the pregnancy challenge last week, the remaining fourteen Project Runway designers returned this week with a more stressed Mitchell having narrowly escaped elimination two weeks in a row. Would the third time be his charm?

Heidi met the designers and told them to pack their sunscreen for the next challenge. Eagerly anticipating their destination, the designers arrived at the beach to meet up with flip-flop wearing Tim Gunn. Tim stood there in his blazer and flip-flops with a look that seemed to say, "I didn't have to put up with this crap in New York."

Project Runway Top 14 Episode 3 Recap: The Third Challenge

The challenge fun and fashionable surfwear look with designers partnering to create the look. Garnier sponsored the event and would provide the models with a fresh surf hair design After winning the challenge last week, Shirin selected her partner first. Tim drew six additional names as team leads, each one taking turns selecting who he or she would work with on this challenge. Mitchell chose Ra'mon and stated he wanted someone who could help carry him this week.

The designers had twenty minutes to caucus and interview a group of surfer girls. The first team to show stress was Qristyl and Epperson who started to debate the type of look to design. Fabric shopping was reduced to 15 minutes forcing teams to make quick decisions.

After the designers settled in and began to work, Tim appeared to announce a twist for this week's challenge. Each team would need to prepare a second avant garde runway look. One designer from each team visited Mood to select a second set of fabric for the new look.

Max Azria of BCBG joined the judging team along with actress and designer Rachel Bilson.

Heidi called forward teammates Louise & Althea, Logan & Christopher, and Shirin & Carol Hannah. Each team qualified to move on to the next round and were dismissed from the stage.

Heidi continued by announcing Nicholas & Gordana and Qristyl & Epperson as having the lowest scores, then asked them to leave the stage while she talked with the two highest scoring teams Mitchell & Ra'mon and Johnny & Irina.

Johnny and Irina explained their look, each designer complimenting the other. Ra'mon described the concept and Heidi questioned why Mitchell didn't speak. Mitchell pouted and admitted Ra'mon did most of the work.

Project Runway Top 14 Episode 3 Recap: Bottom Two Designer Teams Selected

The two bottom teams returned to describe their designs. Heidi started with Qristyl but it quickly turned into a debate on the partnership and less about the design. Qristyl and Epperson argued on stage with Epperson talking over Qristyl the entire time. Rachel Bilson liked the fabric print and Heidi thought parts of the dress fit well. On the team Max Azria stated, "If you're not a team player, you cannot be a designer."

Nicholas described the macrame top on the surfwear piece which Heidi liked. Heidi and the other judges commented on the avant garde piece which used lots of sheer lace. It was too sexy and sleazy, complete with garters.

Project Runway Winner Announced & One Designer Eliminated: Auf Wiedersehen

The judges narrowed the field by announcing Ra'mon the winner (i.e. not the team of Ra'mon and Mitchell) while Mitchell's face when a shade of white. Ra'mon left the stage, as did Johnny and Irina who were also sparred.

Nicholas and Gordana were next to leave the stage having qualified for next week. The final two designers remaining were Qristyl and Mitchell. Heidi called Qristyl's leadership skills into question while she told Mitchell that a winning team member had never been eliminated on Project Runway, until today. Mitchell was asked to leave the runway.

Mitchell reflected on the wonderful opportunity and left with a smile on his face.
