The top thirteen contestants reunited for duets and a few group performances; The Golden Idols were handed out; Top two receive 2010 Ford Fusion hybrids
The May 20, 2009 episode of American Idol, Winner Revealed, was the season finale for the show. The show began with an over-the-top performance by the top thirteen of Pink’s song So What? Former Idol Passes the CrownNearly 100 million people voted, and Kris Allen was named the winner. Last season’s winner, David Cook, returned to the American Idol stage to perform his new song Permanent. After the performance David and Ryan Seacrest, the show’s host, told the audience that if people buy the song on iTunes a portion of the proceeds will go to a charity that raises money for curing cancer. The AwardsOutstanding Male – Wil Kunick, Michael Gurr, Elijah Scarlett, Nick Mitchell, Dean-Anthony Bradford Nick, also known as Norman Gentle, won, and he recreated his wild performance of And I Am Telling You by Jennifer Hudson. Best Attitude – Katrina Darrell (“Bikini Girl”), Alexis Cohen, Tiffany Shedd Katrina Darrell won, and Simon Cowell mouthed “Wow” when she walked out in a new bikini. Ryan let her sing one more time but not before making a less-than-subtle joke about Katrina’s new breast implants. Mid-performance Kara DioGuardi stepped in and stole the show. Kara was amazing, and Katrina looked angry. Kara added to her performance by ripping open her dress and showing off her bikini. Outstanding Female – Chelsea Marquardt, Irene Anguelova, Dana Moreno, Tatiana Nicole Del Toro Tatiana won. She forced herself on to stage to sing for Simon one last time, even though Ryan said they were out of time. Security kindly escorted her off. Not sure if it was a joke or not. The DuetsLil’ Rounds was joined by Queen Latifah for the song Cue the Rain. They sound pretty good together. The song was very catchy and should be a big hit. Jason Mraz brought his hit I’m Yours to the Idol stage. He was joined by Alexis Grace and Anoop Desai. The contestants didn’t add much to Jason’s performance. Kris grabbed his guitar to join Keith Urban for his new song Kiss a Girl. Kris may have found his calling in country music because the pair sounded great together. Fergie and the female contestants sang her hit Big Girls Don’t Cry. The performance was interrupted by the introduction of the Black Eyed Peas, who put on amazing show for their new song Boom Boom Pow. Allison Iraheta sang Time After Time with Cyndi Lauper. The two were perfectly matched, and Allison did an amazing job with the huge hit. Danny Gokey sang a mix of songs with Lionel Ritchie. Danny sounded great singing the songs, but he didn’t seem that in to it at first. He did do a little dancing during All Night Long. Adam Lambert had the craziest outfit, but he fit in perfectly with Kiss. The band was in full costume. Adam matched in his foot-plus-high platform boots and black, metal wings. The group sang a medley of Kiss hits, and Adam seemed like he had been with the band forever. It was an unforgettable performance. Steve Martin was a surprise performer. He played a banjo-like instrument while Megan and Michael performed a sweet, sentimental song. Rod Stewart performed Maggie May. The night was capped with Kris and Adam’s performance of Queen’s We Are the Chamions. Queen joined the two for one of the best performances of the season, and they proved they deserved to be there. Adam did outshine Kris, though.
