The Chopping Block, "101"

NBC’s new show “The Chopping Block” has eight teams of two competing for $250,00 to open their own restaurant. The show is headed by celebrity chef Marco Pierre White, who is cool, calm and collected through much of the first episode. The teams consist of friends, cousins, siblings and couples and are split in to a red team and a black team and then given a restaurant to run. Each week a food critic reviews the restaurant, and one team is eliminated from the losing team, who is picked by the critic.

In the first episode each of the teams prepared a dish for Marco so that he could choose head chefs. Lisa was named head chef for the red team for her lamb chops, and Than was named head chef for the black team for his chicken.

At the teams’ first dinner service things didn’t run as smoothly as they could have, and the food critic had no problem telling them about it. He loved the black team’s appetizer, but their undercooked chicken was unforgiveable. And while he had nothing good to say about the red team’s dessert, he did love their salmon’s sauce. He named the red team the winner, and the black team went back to their restaurant for elimination.

Many members said to eliminate Than because he was the head chef, but Than and Khoa wanted to eliminate Angie because she was horrible in the kitchen. When Angie attacked Than for his choice, Than’s brother Zan, who was a server, fought back. Angie went off about how Zan spent too much time chatting with customers and not enough time serving them and told Zan to zip it when he tried to defend himself. Ultimately none of it mattered because Khoa and Denise, Khoa’s sister, told Marco they wanted to go home because they couldn’t take the fighting.

The show is OK but not great. The drama isn’t there and there is just not enough going on to keep your attention. The food does look delicious though.
