The May 26, 2009 episode of Hitched or Ditched, Bastards Out of Carolina, was the series premiere for the CW show. The reality show gives couples one week to decide if they want to get married or go their separate ways.
Meet the Couple - Travis and CeLisa
The premiere couple was Travis, 32, and CeLisa, 26. Travis is a building contractor, and CeLisa is a nanny. The couple have been together four years. Travis and CeLisa said their biggest obstacle is jealousy, and they have broken up several times.
One Week Earlier
One week earlier Tanya McQueen, the host, and Ashley, CeLisa’s best friend, showed up at CeLisa and Travis’ house to hand them a wedding invitation with their names on it. The couple was shocked but seemed excited.
Ashley said she felt if they didn’t get married now they never would, and Travis and CeLisa said they can’t live without each other.
The conversation wasn’t all happy, though. CeLisa believed that Travis was afraid of marriage, but Travis said he just wanted to make sure he wouldn’t have to worry about things like other men calling CeLisa’s cell phone.
Telling the Parents
With five days until the wedding it was time to tell the parents. The couple told Travis’ parents first. They were speechless, and Travis’ father said he didn’t believe marriage was their best option.
CeLisa was afraid to tell her father. When they did tell him he was shocked, and he took Travis to have a man-to-man chat. He basically threatened Travis’ life several times if he ever hurt CeLisa and didn’t really let Travis defend himself. CeLisa stepped in to defend him, but her father didn’t care. She left crying.
The Truth
Travis and CeLisa invited their families over to clear the air about the upcoming nuptials. CeLisa told the camera she didn’t want have any discussion because they were going to do whatever they wanted.
Travis’ sister was the most outspoken. She said she didn’t believe CeLisa was right for Travis, and she felt CeLisa hurts him too much. CeLisa lashed out by saying she doesn’t mean to hurt Travis, but he makes her mad when he is trying to change who she is.
CeLisa made the situation worse when she announced she was happy to have learned the couple would have 90 days to annul the marriage. The news shocked Travis though, and he began to think maybe CeLisa wasn’t ready.
The Pre-Parties
CeLisa and her girlfriends went to a bar for her bachelorette party. Several men came over to buy them drinks. The girlfriend of one of Travis’ friends called her boyfriend to tell him what was going on, and the boys picked up their party and went to the bar where CeLisa was.
Travis tried to get CeLisa to leave with him, but she refused. Travis became very angry and started to doubt CeLisa was serious about marrying him.
The Wedding Day
The morning of the wedding CeLisa and Travis still didn’t know what to do. To make matters worse, everyone was telling them once again why they shouldn’t get married.
CeLisa looked petrified walking up the aisle, but when her turn came she said “I do.”
Unfortunately, Travis didn’t say “I do.” He told her she looked beautiful but he didn’t feel they should get married. CeLisa walked away crying.
Eventually, CeLisa felt Travis had chosen the right path. She said when Travis meets the right girl she knows he won’t have any doubts. She and Travis both felt good about their decision, and they are no longer seeing each other.
