The May 25, 2009 episode of Here Come the Newlyweds, Battle of the Sexes, was the second season premiere for this ABC show. During the first week the audience was introduced to the couples, and the couples were given a chance to share their impressions of their competitors.

The Couples

  • Sarin and Jed Hinkins – Cedar City, Utah
  • Brendan and Bridget Huffman – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Michele and Sonarak Ieng – Fairfax, Virgina
  • Makayla and Kenny McMorris – Omaha, Nebraska
  • Audra and Rich Newbery – San Francisco, California
  • Katie and Nick Oskowski – Mentor, Ohio
  • Andrea and Matt Smith – Cottonwood Heights, Utah

The couples are very different, and they all have different stories. Some of the couples met in clubs, others reconnected after dating earlier in their lives and another couple remained virgins until their wedding night.

Impressions Quiz

The game started with $100,000 in the pot and a quiz about the other couples. The couples were asked questions and if their answers matched $5,000 would be added to the pot.

The questions were about the other couples’ sex lives, music choices and frequency of fights. Three of the couples had matched answers, and the group added $15,000 to their nest egg.

Can I Shoot My Husband Now?

The couples competed in a men versus women paintball game for breakfast. There was hope for the women, but the men shot the hope down pretty quick. They captured the women’s flag within the first few minutes, and the women were forced to cook breakfast for the men the next morning.

A Clothing Obstacle Course

The couples’ second challenge was about communication. The men were blindfolded, stripped down and forced to get dressed with the help of their wives.

The whole thing was made very complicated because the bedrooms were a disaster, and there were lamps, desks and dressers in their way. There was a lot of screaming and most of them men felt their wives weren’t directing them well enough.

The Newberys had the worst time, and the Smiths had the best time. The Smiths were awarded safety or $10,000. They chose the $10,000.

Elimination

Before elimination the couples were asked questions about the other couples privately. They were asked things like who should win the money if they don’t and if anyone seemed to be a threat. Most of the couples said they weren’t ready to vote anyone off yet because they didn’t really dislike anyone.

The vote came down to the Smiths and the Oskowskis, and the Smiths went home. Matt and Andrea said they weren’t surprised to be up on the chopping block.
