Hell's Kitchen Season 5 Episode 7

Tapas-style Service Proves Troublesome for the Chefs

Mar 20, 2009 Beth VanHoose

With the help of Giovanni, the Red Team wins both challenges, and for the first time ever Chef Ramsay sends a chef home during dinner service.

Returning to the dorm after elimination, Carol cannot believe that Andrea didn't nominate her up to be eliminated. LA, on the other hand, can't understand why she was nominated. Paula agrees with Andrea that LA's performances have been weak. The Red Team seems to have divided into two teams, with Carol and LA on one side and Paula and Andrea on the other.

The Chef' Challenge

The teams meet Chef Ramsay the next morning where he presents them with samples of some of his own tapas-style dishes. After the chefs taste Ramsay's creations, he tells them that their challenge is to create their own tapas dishes using a variety of leftovers. Each chef will create a dish, with 5 dishes from each kitchen.

Since there are 6 chefs in the Blue kitchen and only 4 in the Red kitchen, Chef Ramsay selects one chef from the Blue Team to join the Red Team. The Red Team is afraid that Chef will place Lacey back on their team, but he tells Giovanni to get a red jacket.

The chefs go head to head with their tapas dishes. as Chef Ramsay tastes each one. The kitchen with the most dishes approved by Chef will win the challenge. In the first round, Danny and Paula square off. Chef Ramsay enjoys both dishes so much he gives each kitchen one point. Next up is LA and Lacey. Neither dish meets Ramsay's approval, so no points are awarded. Robert beats out Carol, and Andrea gets the point over J. Both kitchens are tied at 3 points, so the next round will win the challenge. Both Ben's and Giovanni's dishes impress Chef Ramsay, but he gives the nod to Giovanni. The Red Team wins the tapas challenge.

The Red Team's Reward

The Red Team is pleased with the addition of Giovanni to their team. While they are getting ready for their reward, Giovanni gives the girls a pep talk. For their reward, the Red Team gets to spend the day with Chef Ramsay enjoying the horse races at Hollywood Park.

Double Prep for the Blue Team

While the Red Team is betting on the horses, the Blue Team rolls up their sleeves and preps both kitchens for dinner service that night. Dinner service will be tapas-style, so they have to get smaller plates ready for service, in addition to making preparations. Lacey doesn't listen to the guys who are trying to help her, and she walks out of the kitchen ready to quit. Ben follows her and talks her into returning to the kitchen.

Hell's Kitchen Opens

Both kitchens start off slowly because the rice J cooked during prep is unsuitable to serve. In addition to poor rice, the Red kitchen is also serving raw pasta, courtesy of Carol and Andrea. Chef Ramsay sends the two chefs into the dining room with a plate of the uncooked pasta, and tells them to eat the entire plate before they return to their stations.

In the Blue kitchen, J sends out salmon either burnt or raw. Because of his problems with both the rice and the salmon, Chef Ramsay pulls him into the storage locker and tells J he'd better get it together. J returns to the kitchen, but continues to struggle and has the worst dinner service in Hell's Kitchen history. Chef Ramsay gets fed up and tells J to get out of the kitchen, hang up his jacket, and leave Hell's Kitchen forever.

During the chaos in the Blue kitchen, Giovanni emerges as a leader in the Red kitchen, calling out orders and keeping things moving. Chef Ramsay rearranges things in the Blue kitchen to make up for J's absence. It seems that J's struggles are passed on to Ben, as he serves raw Wellingtons, and then puts the replacements on a dirty tray. Chef also takes Ben into the storage closet and tells him he has one more chance to save himself.

In the Red kitchen, Chef Ramsay praises Paula's Beef Wellingtons. The Red kitchen finishes their dinner service first. Carol criticizes Andrea for not being able to admit her mistakes. Despite their problems, the Blue kitchen also finishes dinner service.

Nominated for Elimination

Since Chef Ramsay cannot declare a Best of the Worst chef on the Blue Team, each chef on the Blue Team must nominate a fellow chef for elimination. The teams return to their dorms, and the Blue Team discusses who each will nominate.

Facing Chef Ramsay, Ben, Danny and Robert all nominate Lacey as the chef they want to see gone. Although at first she wasn't going to, Lacey nominates Robert. Chef Ramsay calls Lacey and Ben to the front . After listening to their reasons why they should stay in Hell's Kitchen, Ramsay has both chefs return to their team. Since he threw J out earlier, Chef Ramsay does not eliminate either chef from Hell's Kitchen.
