Hell's Kitchen Season 5 Episode 1

16 Chefs Compete

Feb 8, 2009 Beth VanHoose

In the Season 5 premiere of Hell's Kitchen, sixteen aspiring chefs began their journey to make it or break it under the iron fist and bitter tongue of Chef Gordon Ramsay.

After the 16 chefs were chosen out of a group of 300 top candidates, they were given their first task - to prepare their signature dish for Chef Ramsay. Chef Ramsay was impressed by most of the dishes from the women; the worst were Colleen's chicken enchiladas and Lacey's dish. The men did not fare as well, with Ramsay only praising one dish, Ben's Peking Duck.

The Teams

After the signature dish tasting, Chef Ramsay tells the chefs that they will be divided into two teams; the Blue team, which will be the men, and the Red team of women. He then instructs the teams to go to the dorms, decide on team names, and prepare for their first dinner service the next day.

The women have trouble agreeing on a team name, but finally settle on Team Saffron. The men have decided on the team name Blues Brothers, since they are the blue team. After a good night's sleep, the teams report to their kitchens the next morning.

Dinner Service

Prep for dinner service begins 10 hours before Hell's Kitchen is open for business. Lacey has problems with her station and wants to quit due to lack of experience. She leaves prep to give herself a pep talk. She finally decides to return to the kitchen to help her team. While the Red team resents Lacey's lack of enthusiasm, the Blue team is questioning Seth's ability to handle the task at hand.

At the start of dinner service, Chef Ramsay informs the teams that eight chefs is one too many to be in each kitchen. He selects one member from each team to wait tables. Carol will serve for the Red team, while Giovanni is selected for the Blue team. Carol quickly wins over her diners and starts getting appetizer orders for the Red team. Giovanni struggles however, and cannot seem to remember the menu for that evening's service.

As appetizer orders start arriving at the kitchens, the teams go to work, but not to Chef Ramsay's satisfaction. Ramsay sends plate after plate back into the kitchens for a variety of reasons including food not being cooked properly and wrong ingredients being used.

Power Outage

Just as both kitchens start to gain a little momentum, the power goes out in Hell's Kitchen. Carol and Giovanni work to keep customers happy until power can be restored. Once power is restored the Blue team sees it as a fresh start and begins to send out appetizers. In the Red kitchen, Colleen consistently struggles to please Chef Ramsay.

The Blue team serves all its appetizers and begins to work on entrees. Wil is at the Garnish station and cannot seem to match the correct side dish to the orders. He gains assistance from all members of his team during service in order to complete his station.

The Red team is still struggling with appetizers and the Blue team is trying to get entrees served when diners begin to leave. This causes Chef Ramsay to close the kitchen and put an end to a disappointing dinner service.

The Winner

Since, in his opinion, both teams lost, Ramsay relies on customer comment cards to choose the winning team. The comments rated the servers, Carol and Giovanni. The majority of Carol's diners rated her above average, while the majority of Giovanni's diners rated him well below average. Ramsay declared the Red team the winners. The Blue team had to nominate two of its members for elimination, with Chef Ramsay making the final decision.

Elimination

The Blue team nominated Seth and Wil. Both nominees were allowed to state why they should remain before Chef Ramsay made his decision. In the end, Chef Ramsay instructed Wil to hang up his jacket and leave Hell's Kitchen.
