Six singles live in a house without being able to see the opposite sex; The singles are professionally matched; The singles work with sketch artists to see their partner
On July 20, 2009 ABC premiered its new reality show, Dating in the Dark. The show puts three single men and three single women in separate wings of a house and every once in a while allows them to have short dates in a pitch black room. At the end of the experiment the singles are allowed to see one person in the light and then asked to decide if they would like to continue the relationship outside the house. Getting to Know Each OtherThe first step first the singles was to learn a little bit about each other in a group setting. In the black room the singles learned each other’s names and a little bit about who they are, such as what they do for a living and their interests. Leni seemed to hit it off with everyone. She loved how smart Stephen was, how Allister spun turn tables for a living and what kind of car was Seth’s favorite. Smelling Each Other OutNext, the singles switched shirts to get a sense of the others’ scents and style. The women weren’t really impressed with the men’s shirts. Allister’s had pit stains, Seth’s was ugly and Stephen’s shirt was apparently to big. For the men Stephen did most of the talking. He went on about phermones and how much the woman’s scent meant to him. He ended up choosing the woman whose scent he felt he had connected with. The First DateLeni and Seth’s first date went well, but the pair didn’t seem to have a strong connection. Stephen and Christina chose each other for their first date, but they didn’t hit it off as well as they had anticipated. Stephen also appeared to creep Christina out by sniffing her neck. No one picked Allister, but he was OK with that. He doesn’t seem like the most confident guy. He did get to go on a date with Leni because she had picked him, but she told the other women there was no connection. Your Perfect MatchBased on professional opinions and compatibility tests the singles were matched with their “perfect match.” They were all hesitant at first, but after a few dates they only wanted to spend time with their perfect match. Christina and Seth got very close during a game of golf and ended up making out several times. Christina said she was intrigued my Seth during their first meeting and was very happy they had chemistry. Melanie didn’t think she and Allister would have a lot in common but it didn’t take long for them to bond. Melanie loved Allister’s sense of humor and how open he was with her. He talked about the hard life he had led, which made her feel more connected to him. Leni and Stephen seemed to only have a sexual connection. The viewers didn’t see a lot of intense conversations like with the other couples, but Stephen and Leni were always happy to be around one another. The Big RevealBefore everyone revealed themselves the singles were given the chance to guess what their partner looked like. Sketch artists were brought in, and the singles came pretty close to matching their partner. The men felt their pictures were much better looking than they were, though. Stephen was ecstatic about the way Leni looked, but Leni wasn’t so sure Stephen was good looking enough for her. The two did end up deciding to give it a try, though, and Leni said she felt they had a really great connection going. Melanie giggled when she saw Allister because she couldn’t believe how handsome he was, and Allister thought Melanie was unbelievably cute. Melanie feared Allister was too good looking for her, but he was more than happy to see her again. Seth thought Christina was gorgeous, but Christina just wasn’t attracted to Seth. She ended up leaving without saying goodbye, and Seth was devastated when he saw her walk out of the mansion.
