Thirteen girls chosen from the opening week’s show join Jay Alexander at LA’s Fashion District, where they see the “green machine,” i.e., a limo bus with grass on the seats and recycled tires. He tells the girls that America’s Next Top Model is “going green” and joining the cause for environmental friendliness.
All Aboard the Green Machine
Next stop: the model house, a gorgeous structure overlooking the hills. Like the limo bus, the house will have as many green features as possible to emphasis the theme of this cycle. It also boasts a runway complete with light up monitor so the girls can watch themselves practice their catwalks.
Many of the girls are hanging out and getting to know one another while they explore their new residence. While most of the ladies seem to get along fine, we know it just wouldn’t be ANTM without a little push and pull from the different personalities and egos. Ebony is clearly affected by the way the girls have perceived her, while Heather is just trying to deal with her Asperger’s syndrome and trying to find a way to relate.
Effects of Smoking Illustrated Through Photo Shoot
In following the health and Earth conscious theme, the first photo shoot for the girls is one to create awareness on the affects of smoking. In the first shot, the girls look glamorous while holding a cigarette as they gaze into a mirror. In the second shot (which will be their reflection) they are photographed in the same pose but with the effects of smoking clearly shown: diseased lungs, yellowed teeth, wrinkled skin. Some of the girls portray cancer victims; some cough up blood, and show loss of hair. While most of the girls are able to get into the sad and serious side of the second picture, Mila laughs hysterically and has a hard time showing the true emotion needed to pull off the grim shot.
Saleisha and Heather are assigned to a joint picture to illustrate the effects of second-hand smoke. Heather can’t seem to relate to her and Saleisha appears upset and worried about their photo.
Meanwhile, Bianca begins trash talking, first about Lisa and then Ebony. Ebony seems visibly affected by the negatively and struggles with her photo. Lisa, however, fights back, causing an embarrassing verbal catfight between the two contestants. Back at the house, Bianca says she’s sorry to Lisa in front of the other girls but when alone later admits her apology was done “strategically” so the girls wouldn’t hold it against her.
Old Navy Field Trip
Miss J arrives the next day to tell the girls they need some clothing basics before they appear before the panel later. They head over to Old Navy where they are greeted by Benny Ninja. Benny helps them choose outfits as thirteen girls run through the aisles of an Old Navy Store, completely destroying it.
As the models later appear before the judging panel, Tyra informs them that the reason they were assigned to do a photo shoot on smoking was because ANTM is taking a stand on the effects of nicotine. Since smoking is so prevalent in the model community, Tyra is taking a stand for all the girls out there watching and declares this cycle completely smoke free. This causes Jenah, a smoker, to look at her in horror.
The judges critique the outfit choices made from the Old Navy trip, and declare Saleisha the winner. She receives a $1,000 Old Navy shopping spree and the bonus of doing an ad with them at a later date.
Mila Fails to Give Real Emotion
Tyra comments that in general the girls seemed to have an easier time getting the vibe of the more serious second picture in the smoking photo shoot than they did with the easier first shot. All, that is, except Mila, who appeared almost wooden in both pictures. As the judges critique Mila, she stares blankly back at them. The judges later wonder if anything they said sunk in with her. In the end, it is this inability to be real that causes her exit. Mila is eliminated.
