Tyra Banks brings us back to the beginning of Cycle 9 with this recap episode. It seems fitting that the show should start with Bianca, since she’s been the antagonizing force in the model house. The first moments show Miss J going through her luggage and throwing away articles of clothing before they’ll even let her on the boat.
The Change in Ebony
In viewing episode highlights back to back, it’s surprising to see the transformation that some of the girls have gone through. Ebony, for example, started out mean and fierce. She tells the other contestants that she’ll start remembering their names when she makes it to the model house. She tells Tyra to look no further because she’s going to do what it takes to win. As the weeks go on, Ebony seems defeated by the criticism that comes with modeling. In Week 6 she tells Tyra she wants to go home.
Prickly Vickie
Another surprise is Victoria, who in the first week says she wants to be on the show because she’s tired of “being the nerd.” As the weeks went on, however, she made snide comments about the modeling industry and argued with the judges. She became aptly known as having a prickly personality. Perhaps it was fitting she went home in Week 4 after posing as cactus.
Bianca's Confrontations
Bianca’s litany of arguments was an unsurprising highlight, as she started up with nearly every girl on the show. Flashbacks showed her fighting with Ebony before the competition even started, Lisa on the second photo shoot, and Saliesha and Heather at the model house. However, a never before seen confrontation initiated by Chantal to defend Saliesha was a guilty pleasure to watch.
Jenah's Dental Dilemma
Perhaps the only girl Bianca didn’t get into it with was Janet, who gained her respect for showing Bianca how to unclog a toilet. Ever the “mama” of the group, Janet also was shown comforting Jenah after she chipped her tooth on the bottom of the pool. Jenah’s struggle to quit smoking was evident with previously unseen pranks that included ripping off Sarah’s swimsuit top as she swam and throwing food at her housemates.
Tyra Talks Weight and Body Image
Fittingly, Tyra rounded out this recap by confronting issues in the modeling industry. The pressure to lose weight is prevalent throughout, and already thin girls are put at risk in order to shed pounds. Tyra, along with Dani, America’s Next Top Model Cycle 6 winner, discussed this with the contestants during a surprise visit. Dani revealed that she was asked to lose weight during her first trip to an agency in New York. This prompted Sarah, a normal sized girl by traditional standards, to admit she fears being rejected because she is larger than most of the rail-thin girls she competes against. Tyra ended by urging the girls to remember that their health should always be their first concern.
