Simon tells Adam Lambert he will be a worldwide sensation no matter what happens; Kris Allen gains Simon's vote back with a repeat performance

On the May 19, 2009 episode of American Idol, 2 Finalists Compete, the performers sang a song chosen by the show’s creator Simon Fuller. They also sang the season’s official song, No Boundaries, which will be the winner’s first song.

Repeat Performances

Adam Lambert recreated his performance Mad World by Gary Jules. Between the smoke and Adam’s somber voice, the performance was captivating. Randy gave it an A plus. Kara said she was so happy he chose that song because that is the song that made him an artist. Paula loved the theatrical performance. Simon said he loved the performance the first time, but this time around was too theatrical.

Kris Allen chose to sing Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers again. He rocked the piano, and his voice sounded incredible. Randy said it was one of his best performances ever. Kara agreed and added that Kris creates an intimate bond with every person in the audience. Paula said Kris now shows potential to be a great artist. Simon said he wasn’t sure if Kris was the right choice, but he takes it back after the performance.

Round Two Performances

The round two performances were chosen by the show’s creator, Simon Fuller.

Adam sang A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. It was a very soulful song for Adam, but he put his dramatic twist on it. It was really a one-of-a-kind version of the song. Randy said the performance was unbelievable. Kara said it was probably Adam’s best performance and interpretation of a song. Paula said it was the best she had ever heard him sing. Simon said Adam was back in the game.

Kris sang What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. The song was a great fit for Kris’ voice. The performance was outstanding, but it didn’t stand out as much as Adam’s performance. Randy thought it wasn’t right for the venue. Kara said Kris was the perfect person to sing that song. Paula said Kris made Marvin Gaye proud. Simon said it was too laid back for the finale, and he felt Kris didn’t make it his own.

Performing the Single

The American Idol winner’s first single is called No Boundaries. Each performer was given the chance to sing it before the episode ended.

Adam sang first. It wasn’t the best fit for him, but the performance was still amazing. He was confident, exciting to watch and really looked like a star. Randy said it wasn’t his favorite performance because it was pitchy. Kara said she was proud. Paula said she will be a fan forever. Simon said Adam has been one of the best and most original contestants ever.

Kris also had a hard time with the song. The fit wasn’t great, and Kris’ performance wasn’t standout. Randy said the song fit Kris a little better than Adam. Kara called Kris a compelling artist. Paula said she wishes Kris the best of luck no matter what happens. Simon said he was impressed with how far Kris has come.
