David Cook is the American Idol for 2008! At the finale, May 20 and 21, 2008, Cook was voted American Idol by 12 million votes over Archuleta. Idol's David Cook rocks!

David Cook Wins American Idol 2008 on May 21, 2008! The American Idol 2008 Season 7 Finale show was awesome.

On May 14, 2008, Syesha Mercado was the second to last contestant to go home, although she had strong performances the night before. Someone had to leave, even though over 50 million votes were cast across the United States. And then there were two.

David Cook vs David Archuleta in the Finale Show

The final 2 contestants fought it out (via song) for the crown on May 20, 2008 American Idol TV show. The judges called the night a "knock out" for Archuleta. However, the fans voted differently and the next night David Cook was announced as the winner of American Idol 2008. He will get a million dollar recording contract, and both young men were awarded brand new Ford cars, so was is a life-changing week for the singing "Davids."

Who Did People Think Would Be the Next American Idol?

Most people "overheard" chatting online expressed a feeling that it would be David Cook and David Archuleta facing off at the finale. They were right, of course, but it looked as if it would be a close race in the end. These are two very different young men with very different singing styles and both with strong fan bases thoughout the competition. They both did well.

David Archuleta remained near perfect with his vocals. He has stuck pretty much with ballads with a few "near-rock" songs thrown in.

David Cook, generally based in rock and roll, also has a beautiful voice for ballads. He is humble and charming.

Both of these young men have a lot going for them. There is little doubt they will both go on to have terrific careers in music. Syesha, as well, will certainly be in the recording room quite soon.

All the top 10 contestants from this season will show up for the finale on Wednesday, May 21 and will be singing together, as per past years. Next for the top ten will be a year-long tour. Tickets go on sale soon.

David Cook is the American Idol winner for 2008. He said in an interview that before the winer was announced he was prepared to hear the name "David Archuleta." Upon the winner being announced, David Cook hugged Archuleta before he had really realised he was the actual winner. Archuleta was poised and gracious and Cook was thrilled and emotional.
