After over 47 million votes had been counted, the final four American Idol contestants were announced on April 29, 2009. Also, Natalie Cole, Jamie Foxx and Hicks performed, and two idol contestants celebrated a birthday.
American Idol, Results Show
Before the contestants were introduced Ryan asked Simon what he thought of last night’s show. Simon said he thought it was the best show they have had at this stage over all the seasons. “This is an open competition,” he added.
The singers premiered a new Ford commercial. The commercial had a U2 vibe and was set to Energy by Apples in Stereo. They also showed off their swing sides with a Rat Pack medley.
Ryan showed the viewers an out-of-control video of the singers. They had originally planned to make a birthday cake to celebrate Danny and Allison’s birthday, but a cake and frosting fight broke out. The laughs settled down a little after Ryan presented Danny with a $6,000 cleaning bill for the kitchen. Joke? No joke? Not sure.
When asked, Matt said he thought he did great the night before. Matt said he felt very emotionally connected to the song and was happy with his performance. Matt was placed on the right side of the stage.
Danny was sent to the left side of the stage. Ryan asked what he did different last night, and he explained he has been studying other people, although he didn’t admit who. Allison joined Danny on the left side of the stage.
Kris was moved to the right side of the stage with Matt, and the crowd freaked out when his name was called.

Adam, the remaining singer, was also an immediate crowd pleaser. Ryan asked him which group he thought he belonged in, and he said, based on the previous night, he belonged with Allison and Danny. Ryan then moved him to be with Matt and Kris and announced that those three were the week’s bottom three. Allison’s and Danny’s faces were completely blank and the audience looked shocked. The judges were surprised, and they all explained that this season is a really difficult choice.
Natalie Cole performed and announced an upcoming tour that includes a stop in Korea. Other performances on the episode came from actor/singer Jamie Foxx and season five American Idol winner Taylor Hicks. Jamie said he hopes American will support the five remaining singers even after the show because they are five of the most talented people he has seen in the last 10 years.
Kris was taken from the bottom three and placed in the top two, leaving Matt and Adam to worry about their safety. Eventually, Ryan announced that Matt Giraud was going home.
