13 - Fear is Real Episode Five RecapCW Horror Reality Series Episode, "A Lesson in Terror"
This week's episode of 13: Fear is Real is filled with revelations and eliminations, as a long-running mystery is solved and one cast member goes home.
As this week’s episode of 13: Fear is Real begins, Ted and his cronies take Rodney aside and try to convince him that he’s the killer and that they’re all fine with that fact. Rodney rebuffs their accusation, stating that in the horror films that inspired this show, “It’s not really the person you think it is.” Then again, sometimes the killer is exactly who you think it is. But there is no time to dwell on that now, as business is about to pick up. The Mastermind leaves a “present” for Cody which turns out to be a macabre scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings about high school murders. The gang shares a tender moment as they huddle around reading about slaughtered teenagers and where their bodies were found. The team then leaves their abandoned fort for (surprise!) an abandoned high school where they stumble upon a shrine dedicated to the slain high school students from the scrapbook clippings. This Week's Challenge, Another Hide and SeekOf course, the scrapbook, the school and the shrine are just an elaborate segue to this week’s competition to determine who goes to the execution ceremony. Apparently the serial killer has hidden the six dead students’ class rings, scattering them around the school in different classrooms like a villain bent on world domination in a Nintendo game. The contestants discover the rings one by one inside pig fetuses, dead fish, and other similarly vile places like… inside a football? That’s the best they could do? Much like last week’s key under a bale of straw, there is nothing scary about reaching into a football to pull out the hidden ring. Melyssa finds the final class ring in a controversial manner, as Ted (who had already found a ring of his own) points out the coveted item’s location to Melyssa, leaving Rodney and Leah the two unsuccessful members of this scavenger hunt. Killer's Identity RevealedEven though Rodney failed to secure a class ring in this week’s challenge, he’s not complaining. He’s talking about something else entirely – the answer to the question that has plagued viewers for nearly three long weeks. That’s right, after claiming only one measly victim, the killer’s identity is revealed, and it's Rodney. No surprises here since the show has been constantly hinting at this. But even though he has revealed himself to the home audience, he is still on the loose and unknown to his peers, ready to kill off more contestants when the time is right. In his words, "I think I can play the role quite well.” But can Rodney play the rest of the game well enough to continue on as the killer? After all, he won't be eliminating others if he gets eliminated himself. Execution Ceremony, Player EliminatedBefore the ceremony Leah, the self-proclaimed underdog, weeps into the camera and confesses her love for the other contestants: “I’m scared of not being around these people that I’ve spent what feels like a lifetime with.” It seems like the cast members are always scared of going home, not scared of the challenges and ceremonies that are supposed to instill fear into them. Of course that all changes once Leah and Rodney are tied to tables and placed straight into Edgar Allan Poe’s The Pit and the Pendulum, where a giant blade slowly lowers from the ceiling to slice the losing contestant in half. After a brief struggle, Leah frees herself and remains safe for one more week, which means that the ever-elusive killer, the holder of the Death Box, is eliminated from the show after taking out only one single player. Perhaps this innovative twist on the Survivor-esque reality horror show did not work out as well as the show’s producers had hoped. So Rodney is chopped to bits, in the fictional aspect of the show, and he manages to break off a tooth in the very real part of the show. What he didn’t do, however, is live up to expectations as the killer. The show ends with the remaining cast members leaving the oh-so-creepy school and heading to a new undisclosed locale for next week’s episode.
